Baraga County Historical Museum
The Baraga County Historical Museum has copies of indexes to all births, marriages, and deaths recorded by the Baraga County Clerk from 1875 to the early 1970s. These are official county records and list most persons who were born, died, or married in our county. The records for the early decades do have gaps as births or deaths occuring at home were not always recorded until many months after the fact, if at all.  For information prior to 1875, records of birth, marriage, and death were filed in Houghton County.

Other holdings at the Museum include the Strieter scrapbook, which was Mrs. Strieter’s personal collection of photographs and newspaper clippings of babies born at her maternity home in L'Anse.  This book is badly worn and is not available to the general public for review, however, Museum volunteers will search it for you. The scrapbook has no index and clippings and photographs are not dated.

Other holdings at the museum that may be of interest to researchers include business ledgers belonging to 19th century entrepreneur Captain James Bendry, county records such as early 20th century poll books, and business records from Sirard Logging.

Although we welcome researchers to visit the museum and use our archives, the Baraga County Historical Museum is not able to conduct any research itself. The Historical Society is a 100% volunteer organization and does not have any members available who feel comfortable doing research at this time.
